Teachers and parents co-existed side by side to create a nurturing learning environment – both at school and at home.
However, when the pandemic happened, teachers in Singapore are forced to close the four corners of their classroom and favor virtual classes for safety.
Shifting Roles and Dynamics
While we’re all fortunate that technology is advanced enough to provide our needs, the shift to online tuition classes is still tough. Especially for the parents, who are both working from home and assisting their children with classes. The additional role can be frustrating for parents who are already juggling household chores, full-time jobs, budgeting, and the safety of their family.
This is equally frustrating for teachers as well. Especially tenured ones with little knowledge about video conferencing apps, video module editing, and more.
To make matters worse, not all students have the capacity to learn by themselves. Not to mention technical issues such as malfunctioning laptops, faulty internet connection, and lack of personal space for online classes.
Making it Work – Teachers and Parents Unite
Communication is key in online classes. Teachers should also communicate with parents to discuss what online learning method works best for the child. They should check in with how the students are doing – mentally, physically, and emotionally.
The overwhelming workload may seem heavy at first, but once teachers and parents put the student’s needs and best interests first, everything will fall into place.
It helps to create a learning map or guide where parents can assist teachers in implementing. Parents can trace the guide back to where their child wasn’t able to keep up.
Limited Movements Doesn’t Mean Limited Learning
While extracurricular classes such as soccer, theater, music lessons, and more are on hold, parents can still opt for online recreational courses. This may mean English tuition classes, art classes, or even singing lessons that would mold students to have a productive home learning experience.
Tuition centres in Singapore have already mastered this method if you wish to optimize their academic load at home.
